In the year 1969, he was made to tour England where many of his bowling colleagues failed at their skills. This was the time he emerged as a left arm and got better and better in every game he played. He found his bowling rhythm in this tournament and later revealed that the selection to the team was denied to him initially by New Zealand’s intermittent first-class fixture list.

In the following matches after returning from the England tour, Howarth played his first nine Test matches and bowled 436.5 overs. He won the match for his home team for the first time with India in the grounds of Nagpur. This match had Hanif Mohammad play his last match. He also made his team win over Pakistan for the first time ever in Lahore after taking five wickets of the opponent team. The main benefits of him bowling so well were his height, turn, variation, flight, and big hands. These features helped him to be proficient at taking return catches. This player had a remarkable work ethic and bowled his best in the five-Test series in the Caribbean held in 1971-1972. But when the New Zealand cricket team was just getting into semiprofessional form, the player opted to devote more time to family and his business. His death occurred due to cancer in November 2008 in his hometown Auckland, New Zealand.
