Rahi Sarnabot is a female athlete from India who competes in the 25metre pistol shooting. Born and brought up in Kohlapur, Rahi Sarnobat grabbed the spotlight in 2013 when she became the first Indian pistol shooter to win the gold medal in the World Cup. Rahi Sarnobat is also the first woman shooter to win a gold medal in Asian Games.

It was back in 2006 when things changed for Rahi Sarnobat.  Tejaswini Sawant, an Indian shooter, hailing from Kohlapur, was returning home after winning 2 Gold Medals at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. She had a hero’s welcome and among the audience was a certain girl, studying in the eighth standard, whose eyes lit up.  She was Rahi Sarnobat, who then, saw a dream of winning laurels for the nation, just like her hero Tejaswini Yadav.

In 2008, Rahi was in her tenth grade and had to appear for her board exams. Despite the pressure, she started her shooting practice without informing her father.  The results were soon out and Rahi had successfully cleared the exams, which gave her the confidence to tell about her dreams to her dad.

Preparations were now underway at the Smabhaji Raje Shooting Centre in Kohlapur and Rahi was spending hours and hours to work towards her dream of bagging gold for the nation.

EARLY LIFE

Rahi Sarnabot was born in Kohlapur city in Maharashtra. In a bid to train in a 25-meter pistol shooting, she later moved to the city of Pune. Be it her parents or her aunty and uncles, everyone supported her throughout her journey. Her family always stood by her in her good as well as bad times.

The Indian shooter trained under the coaching of Ajit Patil initially in 2004 before Anotolli Piddubnyi took on the responsibility to train her. Sadly, Anotolli Piddubnyi passed away in 2015 which perhaps dampened Rahi’s spirits.

PERSONAL LIFE

Rahi Sarnobat did her schooling from Usharaje High School, Kohlapur. It is understood that Rahi Sarnobat is an introvert and prefers to stay at home when not playing. She is an avid reader and loves to read books on human relations and philosophy. Rahi also watches Bollywood and Marathi movies in her free time. In all, her hobbies include Cycling, Reading Books, and listening to music.

Rahi has a sharp memory and knows the exact date and other details of all the competitions she has taken part in. She is currently employed with the Maharashtra Government as the deputy collector (revenue).

Rahi Sarnobat, as on today, is unmarried and hasn’t spoken of any plans of the same.

Rahi Sarnobat is currently coached by Munkhbayar Dorjsuren at Shiv Chattrapati Sports Complex, Pune. Her fellow Maharashtrian Tejaswini Sawant is her inspiration who is a 50m rifle prone world champion.

Rahi won the 25m pistol event in the ISSF World Cup in Changwon. In 2014, she claimed a gold medal in Women’s 25-meter pistol in Commonwealth Games, held at Glasgow. She bagged a bronze medal in the 25-meter pistol team event at the 2014 Asian Games, held at Incheon.

Rahi got selected in the 2012 Olympics after winning a bronze medal in the World Cup 2011. She became the first Indian shooter to qualify for the 25-meter sports pistol event in the Olympics.

Rahi won a gold medal in 25m pistol event with a record score of 34 in 2018 Asian Games, becoming the first Indian woman individual Asian Games gold medalist.

Rahi Sarnobat won a gold medal in the 2019 World Cup, held in Munich Germany and thus got selected for the 2020 Olympics, scheduled to be held in Tokyo.

HONOURS

In 2015, Rahi Sarnobat was honored with Arjuna Award by the National Rifle Association of India.
